IMAGE DRESSING TIP:  Scarves for Men and Women

   

"I don't know what to do with my scarf--I just throw it around my neck." This is the accessory question I address most frequently this season.  Here are a few guidelines for wearing this year-round accessory in interesting and flattering ways:

1.  Pay attention to the scarf's "hue" (color), "temperature" (how warm/cool the hue is), "value" (light/dark), and "intensity" (bright/muted).  As the scarf may be the fabric closest to your face, be sure the color elements complement your skin tone.  Don't be afraid to use a variety of colors--break out of the dark-neutral predictability!

2.  Pay attention to the weight of the scarf's fibers and fabric, which should be similar in weight to the coat, sweater, shirt, or top it's accessorizing.  Arrange heavier materials in simpler styles, while lighter materials can be styled in more complex manners.
