Rebecca Levenberg is the daughter of one of our long-time clients, and she has an inspirational story that we wanted to share.
On November 9, 2010, Rebecca was biking from her South Philadelphia home to work, when a garbage truck struck her at the corner of 5th and Washington - breaking a number of ribs, causing severe abdominal injuries, and causing one of her lungs to collapse.
Rebecca's leg needed to be amputated, and after enduring months of surgeries, she decided to set a goal to motivate herself to heal: She would walk 1,000 miles by the second anniversary of the accident. Last Wednesday, she had made it to 160 miles, as the Jefferson Hospital trauma team that saved her life walked with her for an eight-block trip around the facility.
"This unfortunate incident could not have happened to a better person, she's really embraced this," Dr. Niels Martin, one of the physicians who was in the emergency room with Rebecca, told ABC Action News. "Her enthusiasm, I'm sure, is helping many others like her."
"I don't know where I'll be walking or how fast, but my goal is to finish 1,000 miles next year on this day," Rebecca told the TV station.
Rebecca writes a blog about her story and progress, and we encourage everyone to read and support her. She always quotes the Confucius saying that "the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step" - and we are happy to see that she's well on her way!
